Almost 700,000 low-income families in California will soon have better access to health care.
A coalition of business, health and education leaders is launching a new health care outreach program for low-income children.
The Express Lane Eligibility program reaches out to families when they sign up for school lunch programs.
Parents can release their financial information to social service agencies when they sign their kids up for free lunches. The agencies then check whether they qualify for public health insurance.
The program was slated to start this past summer. But state budget cutbacks pushed it back to next July.
Funding for next year´s launch still hasn´t been secured because of continued budget problems. But program officials say they´re optimistic about its chances.
