Assemblyman Dave Cogdill may not be helping Sonora get a sales tax measure before city voters, but he is trying to help Tuolumne County on a tax issue.
The Republican legislator this week introduced a bill to forgive most of the $1.1 million in property tax that the county unknowingly shorted the state in the 1990s.
But with the state facing a $21 billion deficit, legislative leaders have warned that bills that cost money face very long odds.
Cogdill recently turned down a request to sponsor legislation to allow the city of Sonora to put a quarter-cent sales tax proposal before voters. Greg Applegate says the city is asking Cogdill again.
City officials want to try the tax hike to raise police salaries and hire more officers.
