Jelly Belly Hit With Fine

The federal government has fined the Jelly Belly Candy Company $200,000 for alleged air violations at its Fairfield plant.

The Environmental Protection Agency issued the fine December 20th for violations that occurred when the candy plant expanded in the mid-1990s. The agency found Jelly Belly did not apply for a Clean Air Act permit from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District when it expanded from 1994 to 1997.

The EPA said Jelly Belly uses flavorings and products with ethanol, used in the finishing process to give the beans their shine, that emit compounds that lead to ozone formation.
