A rescue plane carrying an ailing American doctor from the South Pole has now left Antarctica for Chile —
the final leg of a dangerous journey.

The six-hour flight will carry Doctor Ronald Shemenski to the southernmost tip of South America. From there, he is
expected to get a commercial flight to the United States.

He´s been diagnosed with an inflammation of the pancreas, which could be a life-threatening
ailment. But doctors say he´s in stable condition.
