BART riders would like to see BART tunnels and the transbay tube wired for phones. The widely
publicized use of cell phones by victims and
survivors of the September eleventh attacks has apparently elicited this response. A random telephone
survey of BART riders and a poll open to
anyone with access to the Internet found supporters of wireless service on BART outnumbered opponents.
BART gathered public comment at the request of its Board of Directors. The transit agency is preparing to negotiate with a
telecommunications
company that wants to bring cell phone reception to BART´s tunnels. When the plan went public in July, cell phone opponents
bombarded BART
officials with phone calls and e-mails, calling for continued subterranean cell phone silence.
