UC Needs To Spend More To Attract Grad Students

The University of California has to spend 215 million dollars more a year to attract more graduate students.

That´s according to a report by the Commission on the Growth and Support of Graduate Education to be released next month.

The LA Times reports the study warns that the U-C system needs to add eleven-thousand graduate students to remain competitive.

Graduate students conduct their own research, aid faculty with their projects and teach undergraduates. The number of grad students at UC campuses has dropped in the last several decades. Only 17 percent of UC students are in grad school, compared with 30 percent 35 years ago.

Graduate programs are suffering from an emphasis on increasing the number of undergraduate students. Other schools also are offering grad students better financial packages.
