Officials at the San Francisco Mint say they´ll have to lay off 101 employees because the economic downturn means there´s a surplus of coins across the country.
More than 250 other Mint workers in Philadelphia and Denver also will soon be out of work.
Mint officials say they will need some 15 billion new coins next year. That´s a dramatic decline from the 23 billion normally minted each year.
