Sacramento firefighters say they tried their hardest, rushing into a burning apartment Friday to save a 14-year-old boy with Down syndrome. But they found him dead in a first-floor closet.
Firefighters believe Wesley Kagan of nearby Fair Oaks may have started a couch fire in a family friend´s apartment and then hid. They say it is typical for children to hide in closets during fires.
The boy´s mother and her friend escaped by climbing down a second-floor balcony.
