Bus Driver Changes Plea

A school bus driver who had pleaded no contest to gross vehicular manslaughter after the death of a Palms boy has filed a motion to withdraw her plea.

Irene Haley was scheduled to be sentenced yesterday.

She had originally been charged with felony driving under the influence causing death. Investigators say she was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time she drove over 15-year-old Brian Burdett. He had just gotten off the school bus and knelt down to tie his shoes.

Prosecutors say a drug test confirmed Haley had been using the drug on or about the time of the incident but they could not prove she was under the influence at the exact time of the accident.

Haley has been ordered to remain in custody while the judge reviews the motion.
