Heavy rain, snow, high winds and some thunderstorms are forecast over a wide area of California today. There is a winter storm warning today and tonight in the northern mountains and Sierra Nevada. One to three feet of new snow is expected above three-to-four thousand foot elevation today and tonight.
Southwest winds of 40 to 50 miles per hour are expected, with winds gusting as high as 60 to 70 miles per hour over mountain passes and ridges.
In its winter storm warning for the Sierra Nevada, the National Weather Service says snow accompanied by high winds will lower to near 35-hundred feet by tonight in colder air accompanying the second major storm of this weekend.
Weather forecasters said the combination of strong winds and heavy snow will result in blowing, drifting snow with visibility down to zero at times.
