A federal appeals court has overturned the death sentence of a Sacramento hitchhiker convicted of murdering a man whose van he stole in 1985. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals said a typographical error in instructions to the jury may have biased panelists to vote for the death penalty.
