The race for endorsements is on as embattled congressman Gary Condit tries to retain his seat despite publicity over his involvement with a missing Washington DC intern.
Usually politicians´ endorsements don´t matter much to voters. But they can matter a lot to political activists and campaign contributors, and sway public opinion as officials like congresswoman Ellen Tauscher and Governor Davis distance themselves from Condit.
Tauscher is the first member of Congress to reject Condit, saying his candidacy may hurt Democrats´ chances to hold a vital seat.
She and colleagues Zoe Lofgren and Grace Napolitano are backing Condit rival Dennis Cardoza.
However, Rep. Bob Matsui, D-Sacramento, is sticking with Condit.
