Sonora, CA– Residents got a close up look at the Vision Sonora plan at an open house at the Sonora Opera Hall today. Plenty of people showed up to check out the proposed drawings outlining changes to the downtown area. There were representatives from Vision Sonora to field the public’s questions. Sonora Resident Doreen Schmidt gave the plans the thumbs up.
“I love these ideas. I especially like the idea of doing welcoming landscaping on all corridors leading into Sonora. I also, love closing off Linoberg Street as a sitting area. Tourists are looking for that because they don’t want to park and run into a business. They want to sit down and relax and enjoy the surroundings,” says Schmidt.
The goal of Vision Sonora is to improve the mobility and appearance of the downtown district. The proposal calls for things like additional outdoor dining, streetscaping, and walking trails. Council Member Bill Canning has spearheaded the project. He estimates it will cost four to five million dollars.
“This money will all be coming out of different grants that we’ll be applying for in the future. The money won’t be borrowed. There will be no interest paid on it,” says Canning.
However, Canning stresses the plan will never work if the community does not get behind it. The final plan will go before the Sonora City Council for approval in November.
