Calaveras County Students Go To Jail

Angels Camp, CA — One hundred eighth graders head to jail, but also get their day in court in Angels Camp. This Thursday student from Mark Twain Elementary School will get a tour of the new Calaveras County Courthouse and jail before the rest of the public. The students are learning about the Constitution.

13-year-old Kylie Kitchell is excited about the field trip especially, “The tunnel between the courthouse and the jail. I’ve always been curious about it and to learn what a courtroom is like and the whole process. It will be really cool and exciting to see.”

Jeff Airola, grandson of former Superior Court Judge, Orrin Airola, says those family ties helped him arrange the tour.  Airola says, “I want them to see that the court system is not just something you read about in a book. Most of us interact with the justice system at one point in our lives and this way they can see it in the real world.”

The students held their own mock trial to get prepared for the tour. The courthouse opens on November 25th. The jail is still under construction and its opening was pushed back to January.
