Biggest Win Yet For Sonora Volleyball

Sonora, CA — The Sonora High School Volleyball Team is preparing for a state level volleyball tournement. The girls won the Division IV Sac-Joaquin Section title game against Hilmar 3-2 on Thursday, November 21st. Previously they beat Escalon in the semifinal 3-0.

This is the sixth year coaching the volleyball team at Sonora for Head Coach Kim Evans. She says the game against Hilmar, "was a very long, hard fought, match. It kinda went back and forth the whole time with us even being down the first two sets. We were able to battle back against a very good team and pull out the win." The win also means they have the home court for the next game. Many fans are expected at the Sonora gym on Tuesday, November 26th, 7pm.

Evans says about the Hilmar game, "The fans were amazing! The Sonora High student body, administration, alumni and alumni parents, everybody who has been so supportive of us this year, it has just been exciting." Evans noted that a rooter bus brought 50 students to UC Davis where the game was held. She says Sonora was "definetly the loudest section in the gym. It was so much fun and outstanding to see. They definitely got their money’s worth watching us play. We were excited to have everybody there to support us and be a part of it with us."

The Tuesday game is part of the semi final rounds to determine the team that will represent Northern California and play the Southern team for the Division IV State title on December 7th.

Evans will be notified Sunday which team they will be playing. She says "It could be anyone in Northern California."

She also says, "Even though we are on Thanksgiving break, so many students are saying they will be coming back to watch the game on Tuesday. Evens says current band teacher Yvonne Denton and the Golden Regiment band will play at the game.

Looking forward Evans notes "The team has two seniors, seven juniors and two sophomores, so our future still looks bright." She notes, "It is a fantastic group of girls that have put in hours, and hours, and hours of time and dedication to volleyball and it is so wonderful to see it pay off."
