A Green Christmas

Tuolumne County, CA — Tuolumne County wants to remind residents to recycle the Christmas spirit.

There is no rush, but Tuolumne County wants to remind you that when you are ready to take down the tree and decorations you do have options. The Tuolumne County Solid Waste Division suggests trees can be chipped, shredded and used for mulch. This can help with water conservation, weed control, erosion and/or dust control on your property.

Division Spokesperson Belinda Barlow says, “Never burn your Christmas trees in the fireplace. Doing that can cause the pitch in the fireplace to build up and it’s extremely dangerous. Also, burning trees in the open creates air pollution.”

Do not mix the trees with other trash. If you plan on recycling remove all decorations, tinsel, metal tree stands and nails. Barlow says some trees may have a metal supporting rod in the trunk and those must be removed.

Here are the locations and times the trees will be accepted at no charge:

Big Oak Flat/Groveland Transfer Station
10700 Merrell Road (at the end of road)
8:00 am to 3:45 pm, Wednesdays and Saturdays in January
Flocked trees will be charged at the regular disposal rate.

Cal Sierra/Waste Management Earth Resource Facility
14959 Camage Avenue in Sonora (off of Tuolumne Road, near Standard Road)
9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Tuesday thru Saturday in January NOTE: (Facility closed 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm each day)
No flocked trees and all other green waste will be charged the regular rate.
