Sacramento, CA – Federal unemployment payments stop today for nearly 214,000 Californians. Congress failed to pass an extension before the Christmas break and that resulted in the cutoff.
Last week, the California Employment Development Department (EDD) sent out notices alerting individuals with long-term unemployment extension claims that their payments would end. That also included claimants that had a balance on their extension.
Across the country, that means enrollees have lost an average monthly stipend of $1,166. Some analysts warn the economy may suffer since those consumers will have less money to spend. Federal Officials have estimated 1.3 million people will be impacted.
