Sonora, CA — The Regional Academic Decathlon Competition is only a few weeks away. The 32nd Annual Academic Competition involves 76 students from five high schools: Bret Harte High School from Angels Camp, Mountain Oaks School from San Andreas, Sonora High School from Sonora, Summerville High School from Tuolumne, and Tioga High School from Groveland. This year the event will be held at Sonora High School.
Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Joe Silva writes in his newest blog about the event; “A unique aspect of the Academic Decathlon is that it is designed to include students from all academic abilities and achievement levels. Each nine-member team from each school consists of three students in Honor division, three students in Scholastic division, and three students in Varsity division, all placed in each division by the student’s grade point average.”
Summerville High School students have scored the most points overall for 10 years in a row. This year will be the third year that Sonora High School has had a team. Winners at the regional level will travel to Sacramento to compete at the state level. Most of the competition is closed to the public except a part of the Super Quiz scheduled to start at 3:45pm. Parents and the community are welcome to watch that event in the Sonora High School Gym.
