Sonora, CA — The Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Office has officially released the results of the 39th Annual Dr. June McOmber Jr. High Spelling Bee. The county level spelling bee took place on February 5th, 2014, at Curtis Creek School Multitorium.
Each school has its own spell-off and is responsible for determining the top 3 students in each grade level that will participate in the county bee.
1st Place: Caleb Adam from Curtis Creek School
2nd Place: Hannah Mirkin from Mother Lode Adventist Junior Academy
3rd Place: (TIE) Scott Hoyle from Jamestown Elementary School, Michala Scholkowfsky from Connections Academy, Jacob Trantham from Belleview School
According to County Superintendent Joseph Silva 52 students from 11 schools participated in the event. The Soroptimist International of Sonora sponsors the event every year and provides the registration fee to send the 1st and 2nd place winners to the May 3rd State competition in Marin County.
The county level spelling bee is a written competition. The spelling master reads a word, uses it in a sentence, and repeats the word to the students who write it out on paper provided while seated. All students spell the same list of words. If/When a student misses four words, that student is eliminated.
The Tuolumne County Spelling Bee was started in 1975 by Dr. June McOmber, who was in charge of the student participation activities. For more information read Joe Silva’s blog here.
