Cal Fire Headquarters Headed To Sonora

Sonora, CA — Local Cal Fire Officials say the plans to move the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit Headquarters from its 30 year home in San Andreas has been in the works for nearly ten years. The decision was made by the state because it does not own all the land at the current San Andreas site. The new headquarters will be at the old Sonora Fire Station at 2 south Forest Road.

“We are years away from us actually occupying that space,” says Roy Evans the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit Assistant Fire Chief. “There is still a lot of preliminary work to do and we’re in the very beginning stages of this project.”

About 20 employees from the Emergency Command Center and Administration Department will be relocated to Sonora. The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors was updated on the move at this week’s meeting. They questioned the negative impact on the local economy.

Evans says, “People need to understand, this isn’t something that is driven at the local level. There are other agencies involved in this, mainly, the Department of General Services and the Department of Finance.”

Evan says the move is still at least five years out. The Board voted to draft a letter asking state officials to reconsider the move due to the negative economic impact on San Andreas. Evan says the move is still at least five years away.
