Update: Mono Way Widening Project

Sonora, CA — Motorists could face traffic headaches if an alternative to bring construction cost down on the Mono Way Widening project is approved. Staff told Sonora City Council members at their Monday meeting that the roadway might need to be shut down for up to two weeks to install a drainage trench near Roselyn Lane.

The Sonora city council has been seeking ways to reduce the cost of the Mono Way widening project. The city previously accepted bids from contractors. The lowest bid came from George Reed, Inc. at $3,935,645.50 for the work.  In a letter, City Engineer Gerald Fuccillo submitted ideas with some cost-saving alternatives, and their potential cost savings. The first alternative would be to remove a decorative rock finish on a retaining wall, which could save $147,450.

A second alternative that could bring cost down by $222,420 would scrap underground pipeline drainage and replace it with an open trench near a culvert. Fuccillo’s letter states “That would require the closure of Mono Way for a maximum of two weeks near the beginning of the construction, and adds 10 working days to the overall project.” If both alternatives are approved, it will bring the low bid down to $3,565,775.50.

The project is a joint venture of the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors and the city of Sonora. Both will have to approve the final bid and changes. The Supervisors are expected to consider the bids and alternatives and make a recommendation later this month. The City Council should make its final decision in April. The plan is to expand Mono Way to five lanes from Greenley Road to Fir Drive.
