New Water Restriction On Fair Exhibitors

Angels Camp, CA — The drought has The Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee enacting water restrictions on livestock exhibitors. Fair Officials say they have already cut back on irrigation and watering on the grounds.  The gun club and little league fields are not being watered either.  CEO-Fair Manager Laurie Giannini says water will be limited going forward.  That includes livestock exhibitors who will only be able to wash show animals once at the fair.

Giannini says, “That really is part of the education as young agriculturalist that water is their most important commodity. It’s a team effort. We are hoping that through our signage and other things that our fair going public is going to maybe be able to get them educated on water and the importance of it and conservation.”

Here is the directive from fair officials that was emailed to exhibitors and others associated with the fair:

We [Fair Officials] are taking the following steps that affect you directly.

• Exhibitors are encouraged to show animals naturally.(no fitting/enhancing products)
• You will be permitted to wash once at the Fair.  (you will not have the ability to wash  away fitting/enhancing products after you show, this could be dangerous to your animals)
• You will not be permitted to bring in outside water for the purpose of washing.
• Exhibitors who do not comply with the conservation efforts may be eliminated from the show and/or sale.
• Please bring your animals clean from home. (make sure they are dry prior to transporting)

Giannini say, “We are a big user of irrigation water.  We are all in this [drought] together. We need to do what we can to help our neighbors with their water issues.”

The fair runs May 15 – 18.
