Funding Meals On Wheels

Sonora, CA — The 8th annual Meals on Wheels fundraiser held at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park raised $80,000 (net) this year. Julie Von Savoye and Ron Patel are the co-chairs. Von Savoye says the numbers are preliminary but “unfortunately the $80,000 we raised doesn’t take care of everything that the program needs.” She thanked all the people who helped out and says, “I am really proud of this community and all the volunteers.” The “Fiesta” themed event hoped to raise $100,000. It featured a train ride, dinner, entertainment, an auction and raffle prizes.

Von Savoye says the Meals on Wheels program includes volunteers and paid drivers, who deliver not only meals, but provide a chance for seniors to be visited. This year, in the Tuolumne County area, they plan to deliver 57,000 meals to nearly 500 people.

Von Savoye says additional Meals on Wheels fundraisers will be held at future dates. Sierra Senior Providers is in charge of the local Meals on Wheels program. More information can be found at www.sierraseniorproviders.org
