Sacramento, CA — Opponents of the state’s bullet train are asking the California Supreme Court to reverse a recent appeals court ruling.
The Associated Press reports that opponents of the high speed rail project argue that a July 31 appellate court ruling undercuts 100 years of precedent requiring the state to strictly comply with promises made in ballot measures. The lawsuit argues that the High Speed Rail Authority has not identified realistic funding sources for the first leg of the project, which was a requirement of the 2008 bond measure that allocated $9.9 billion.
The petition to the State’s Supreme Court was filed yesterday by attorneys representing the Kings County Board of Supervisors, as well as a Kings County farmer, and a Hanford homeowner.
The overall High Speed Rail project is estimated to cost at least $68 billion.
