Sacramento, CA — The Confederate flag has been flagged in California.

Governor Jerry Brown has made it against state law for government agencies to sell or put up items displaying the Confederate flag. On Thursday, Brown signed AB2444 a bill that was proposed after it was brought to an Assemblymembers attention that replica Confederate cash was being sold at the Capitol gift shop. That legislator, Isadore Hall of Compton says the state should not promote a symbol of racism that is meant to intimidate.

The bill does not violate free speech rights according to lawmakers because it applies only to formal actions of government officials. In addition, it will not affect people protesting or wearing it on state property. The law takes effect in January.
