Sonora, CA — The deadline to file the paperwork to be a write-in candidate in the November 4 election has passed. Candidates needed to have their paper work filed by 5 p.m. today. Tuolumne County Elections Official Debbie Bautista says two candidates made that deadline and have qualified to be write-ins, which is a rarity.
“To the best of my knowledge this hasn’t happened for a long, long time,” says Bautista. “So we will have to count all the write-in votes and tally them up for these candidates and show that they got x number of votes.”
The two write-in candidates are Cindy Deutsch for Tuolumne County Assessor-Recorder and Jim Jacobs for the Twain Harte Long-Barn Union District races. Their names will not appear on the ballot.
Bautista says, “If one wants to vote for either one of the them, then one needs to write their name in underneath where it says “write-in” and blacken the oval next to the name.”
Counting the write-in votes will slow the election certification process, according to Bautista, as each vote will have to be manually verified.
