Sonora, CA – The Mother Lode has had its first wintry storm and if you have not already put on your studded tires, it is legal to do so. State law allows for studded tires starting November 1.
“You can have them on all four tires,” says Jamestown Station CHP Officer Jason Austin. “They add traction to your vehicle in icy and winter conditions. They [studded tires] do not preclude you from having chains, so if chains are required, you need to have chains on your vehicle.”
Studded tires that are also snow tires with deeper treads are what Officer Austin recommends to get through not only ice, but snow on the roadways. Studded tires can only remain on your vehicle until April 30.
