The California Highway Patrol New Year’s holiday Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) kept patrols bustling across the Mother Lode through this past weekend. What follows here are the final stats.
In all, CHP Sonora and San Andreas reporting units say that nine DUI drivers were nabbed and over 100 citations issued for various infractions.
“In Tuolumne County we arrested five DUI drivers and we had four injury collisions as well as eight non-injury collisions…all injury collisions were minor injuries,” says CHP Sonora Unit’s Sgt. Gary Soria. He calls the figures “about normal” for the MEP, adding that a total of 66 citations were handed out, including 26 for speeding and eight for seat belt violations, two major areas of focus for the unit during the period.
In Calaveras County, CHP made five total arrests, of which four were DUIs and the other was for a violation of a restraining order, according to CHP Public Information Officer Rebecca Myers. While the unit worked seven accidents, none proved fatal and for the third year in a row, none turned out to be DUI-related, Myers reports. Focusing on slowing motorists down, Myers says that the San Andreas CHP unit wrote 43 citations, most of which were for speeding, along with several others for mechanical violations.
The final MEP for 2014, which began at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31 New Year’s Eve, ran through midnight Sunday, Jan. 4.
