A new vaccination plan, already in the works before the state’s measles outbreak, will require all University of California students to get their shots.
UC officials announced the plan on Friday. The required vaccinations will be for measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, meningococcus, tetanus and whooping cough. Additionally, students must be screened for tuberculosis.
UC officials say the plan was developed based on recommendations from the California Department of Public Health. It will be phased in over the next three years. This fall all students will be notified about the new requirements. By 2017, incoming students will have to show proof of vaccination.
A measles outbreak at Disneyland in December has spread to a half-dozen states and Mexico. As previously reported, there were fears Tuolumne County had its first measles case earlier this week, but the test came back negative.
