San Andreas, CA – Several reports of an employment scam ad in a local newspaper has the Calaveras Sheriff’s Department putting out an alert to the public.
The swindle involves an ad looking to hire nannies, according to Sgt. Anthony Eberhardt, who explains the person responding to the ad then would be mailed a large check for services not yet rendered. The company then claims it over paid the person and demands a refund check be made out to them. Eberhardt say, meanwhile, the company has already put a stop payment on the original check.
The advertisement has been removed from the paper, but already one person has been bilked out of money, according to Sgt. Anthony Eberhardt. He adds, “What’s concerning is…when people get the newspaper they believe it is a legitimate source and they are actively looking for a job, which makes them vulnerable, in which they receive a payment, which also makes them vulnerable.”
Eberhardt suspects more people may have been scammed, but have just not reported the fraud. He asks citizens to always report frauds so that law enforcement can alert the public and prevent others from being taken. The number to contact the Calaveras Sheriff’s Department is (209)754-6500.
