California Shutting Down Some Oilfield Wells

Sacramento, CA — California regulators are planning to close several oilfield injection wells over the coming months.

The Associated Press reports that there are over 2,000 oil industry wells that were found to be funneling waste and fluids into federally protected underground water reserves. Hundreds of those will be closed down by an October 15^th deadline. They had been issued permits after 2011 against warnings from the federal EPA.

Pressure was recently put on state regulators by the EPA, and some California lawmakers, to take quick action.

23 oilfield wells, which were deemed most threatening to aquifers, have already been shut down by state regulators.
