California Republicans Hoping To Close Loophole

Sacramento, CA – Leading Republicans in the California Senate claim that $5-billion in gas tax money has been diverted to the General Fund since 2010.

Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff says the intent of the transportation tax dollars is to help repair road infrastructure. He and others are proposing a constitutional amendment to ensure that is the case. Huff says, “Our measure puts an end to this budgetary sleight of hand. It will ensure that every dollar we pay in transportation taxes and fees will be spent to build and repair our roads.”

California has 175-thousand miles of public roads, and the Department of Finance recently reported that the roads are in need of $59-billion worth of maintenance.

If the proposal is approved by the legislature, it would be placed on the November 2016 ballot.
