Jamestown, CA — California Highway Patrol (CHP) has a heads up for motorists who are out and about Mother Lode roads over this Memorial Day Weekend.
Beginning at 6 p.m. tonight until midnight Monday, May 25, a Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) will be in effect. Be forewarned, says Officer Ken Bruce, who says, “The CHP officers will be out in full force, and will be especially vigilant in looking for seatbelt use.”
Bruce empathizes, “The intent of the MEP is to keep people safe on the roadways and to educate drivers on traffic safety, NOT to write a high volume of tickets.” He advises all motorists to take their time in getting to their destinations safely, realizing that there will be many more vehicles out on the roads; and to mind all the traffic laws. Most definitely, he requests, “If you see a DUI driver, or someone…who’s having trouble staying within their lane, or you suspect an issue with a driver, definitely call 9-1-1 and report it.”
Across California, over last year’s Memorial Day holiday weekend, at least seven of the 25 vehicle occupants who were killed in collisions were not wearing their seat belts. A word to gentlemen who are not buckling up; fewer men use seat belts and almost twice as many perish than women in motor vehicle accidents, according to National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA). Last year, the CHP made 1,256 DUI arrests, slightly down from 2013 and even more so from the previous years to indicate a gradual downtrend.
