Sonora, CA — Those hoping to replace Sonora High Superintendent Dr. Mike McCoy had until May 25 to apply, and the Tuolumne County’s Superintendent of Schools Office reports that around 20 “highly qualified” candidates did so.
The Sonora High School Board of Trustees asked Tuolumne County Superintendent Margie Bulkin’s office to lead and facilitate the search. Bulkin says, “ Sonora Union High School is a very desirable job, with that staff, and all of the exciting things going on with the school. This is a place where a lot of people want to work and live. So, I was very impressed with the caliber of candidates that have expressed interest in this job.”
Bulkin says the 20 applicants were predominantly from California, but there are also candidates from five other states.
Bulkin says the ideal candidate will understand the community, have the experience to undertake many of the projects that were launched under Dr. McCoy, can lead budget development, school program reforms, and engage the community about the positive happenings of the school district.
Selected finalists will be interviewed by panels that will include representation from staff, parents, community leaders and the community college.
Bulkin says the final selection will be made by the Sonora High Board of Trustees, and could have someone in place before July 1st.
Dr. McCoy recently announced his resignation so that he could accept a Superintendent of Schools position in Southern California.
