No Fees To Contest Traffic Tickets

Sonora, CA — County courts will no longer be allowed to require people to pay a fee before they can contest their traffic tickets.

The Associated Press reports the governing body for California’s court system has banned the practice in a unanimous vote. The issue gained attention when the American Civil Liberties Union sent letters in April to eight Northern and Central California counties, including Tuolumne, where this practice was happening. The Judicial Council decided today that it should be a right to contest a traffic citation, and not contingent on someone’s ability to pay.
