Sacramento, CA — California legislation that would ban the school nickname “Redskins” continues to move through the legislative process.
It would notably impact Calaveras High School in San Andreas, which goes by the name. Yesterday the proposed ban was approved in the Senate Education Committee on a 7-1 vote. The next step is to go before the Senate Appropriations Committee. The legislation has already been approved in the full Assembly. The bill is authored by Democratic Assemblyman Luis Alejo of the Bay Area, and the item is being monitored closely by many Calaveras High School officials.
If eventually approved by the California Senate, it would go to Governor Jerry Brown for his signature.
