Sacramento, CA — Although many motorcyclists in California engage in lane splitting, its legality statewide is a gray area, and it is at the discretion of law enforcement.
Democratic Assemblyman Bill Quick of Hayward introduced legislation this session to make California the first state to pass a law that would make lane splitting officially legal, and also regulate the practice. The Associated Press reports that Quirk wants more time to figure out how to implement the proposed law. The legislation is expected to come up for discussion again next year. Some states have taken the opposite approach, and banned the practice altogether.
Quirks bill would have required motorcycles to travel below 50 mph when splitting lanes.
