Sacramento, CA — An Assembly committee took a step toward increasing California’s minimum wage.
As it stands right now, the state’s minimum wage is already set to increase from the current $9-an-hour to $10 on January 1st. The new proposal debated by the Assembly’s Labor and Employment Committee would boost that amount to $11 on January 1st, $13 in 2017, and then tie the minimum wage to inflation starting in 2019. The Assembly committee approved the idea, 5-1. Governor Jerry Brown has not indicated whether he would sign a minimum wage increase.
It is opposed by many business groups, arguing that it would reduce jobs, and notably hurt smaller employers.
