Delays Keep Calaveras County Yard Waste Site Closed

San Andreas, CA — Improvements and repairs at the Red Hill Annex site are taking longer than first expected, according to Calaveras County waste management officials.

As previously reported, the site originally closed for renovations on June 9, after being inundated with yard waste “over its output capacity,” according to county public works officials, as the drought had forced more residents to clear defensible space for wildfire protection. The shutdown, slated to last three to four weeks, has overshot that mark already by more than a week now.

County waste officials report that crews will be making repairs and improvements to the current water system, which will need to then be finally approved by the Board of Supervisors. Once the okay is given, workers will then do site grading to improve and enlarge the yard waste collection area.

Here is the county’s list of alternative waste facilities that are open and operating as normal:

• All residential loads of yard waste can be taken to the Rock Creek Solid Waste Facility or to Miller Rock & Wood.
• Any appliances, electronics, tires, batteries, oil, antifreeze or filters can be taken to the Gambi Disposal yard in San Andreas or the Rock Creek Solid Waste Facility.
• Any latex paints can be taken to the Rock Creek Solid Waste Facility.

County officials have not released a new time frame for the Red Hill Annex to reopen.
