El Niño Flood Threat Prep

If the predicted deluge of El Niño rains hit the state, do not end up underwater financially due to not having flood insurance.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is urging Californians in flood prone places to buy insurance before it is too late. State statistics show that between 50 to 70 percent of residents living in high-risk flood areas have no federal insurance. FEMA officials want to alert the public that flood insurance must be bought 30 days before the high waters hit.

Friday, FEMA deputy associate administrator Roy Wright shared that being prepared and having flood insurance is the most powerful action a resident can take to protect themselves and their home from the possible heavy rainfall from an El Niño winter. The agencies recommendation is that if you buy flood insurance for just one year this is the year because more than one-third of California flood insurance claims in the past 27 years came in just four El Nino years.
