Sacramento, CA — The state leader that has overseen the process of reducing the state’s prison population will be leaving at the end of the month.
Jeffrey Beard became California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Secretary in December of 2012 and he will retire January 1st. During Beard’s tenure the prison system has gone through a transition period with the AB-109 implementation.
In his letter to the Governor, Beard writes, “Rehabilitation of inmates is now a demonstrably key priority with the addition of programs in all of our prisons, especially the reentry hubs. This investment will help ensure that recidivism continues to fall.”
Beard has also led several reforms stemming from lawsuits related to prison medical care.
Brown will now need to appoint a replacement to the position.
