Update: Crash Involving Spilled Butte Fire Ashes Not Deemed Hazardous

Update 4:30 p.m.: The CHP reports some ashes and burned plastic debris from the Butte Fire that spilled into the North Fork Murray Creek bed after a trailer overturned on Doster Road last Friday were determined non-hazardous. Officer Rebecca Myers states, “There wasn’t any water at the time running in the creek. So it wasn’t a hazmat spill. The company picked up what they lost and it was all cleaned up.”

Original post April 8 at 5 p.m.: San Andreas, CA – The CHP is heading to the scene of a crash involving a pickup truck, which was pulling a trailer full of Butte Fire debris and overturned, possibly dumping hazardous debris into the North Fork Murray Creek bed.

The wreck happened just before 4 p.m. Friday on Doster Road near Sade Lane in Calaveras County. CHP spokesperson Toby Butzler indicates, “Preliminary reports are it is potentially some hazardous debris.  We’re being told it is possibly some ash and burned plastic debris.  Somehow, we’re not sure, the trailer overturned down into the creek bed.  We have officers en route to assess the situation and see if it is a hazardous situation, see if the creek bed even has water in it, we’re not even sure of that yet.”

The CHP reports a hazmat team has been called to the scene as a precautionary measure.  No further details regarding the accident or the driver’s condition are available.  We will bring you more information as soon as it comes into the newsroom.
