Update: Rim Fire Replanting Concludes For Season: Excess Seeds Available

Update 3:20 p.m.: Another location to pick-up seedlings has been added due to popular demand, according to Forests officials. The public can also get the trees at the Mi-Wuk Ranger District located at 24695 Hwy 108, Mi-Wuk Village all next week, Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. For more details, you can contact the district at (209) 586-3234.

Original post at 10:24 a.m.: Groveland, CA — Over the past eight weeks over 1,750 volunteers helped replant over 50,000 trees in the Rim Fire footprint. Volunteers came from as far away as Canada to contribute their time and energy towards reforestation efforts. The Forest Service reports that tree replanting will continue in the foreseeable years during the spring planting months.

Activities this year included a special Earth Day event in which 175 elementary school students, from five schools, planted trees, and also learned about soils, fire ecology, animals and hydrology. Eight partner organizations were on hand to share knowledge with the local youth. The “Every Kid in the Park” initiative funded transportation for the students as part of its year-long program to connect 4th grade students to public lands.

The Stanislaus National Forest reports that there are excess Ponderosa Pine and Incense Cedar seedlings that will be available to the public on a first-come-first-served basis. Forest Spokesperson Rebecca Garcia notes that up to 50 seedlings will be available per person, and they are notably for the use of reforesting private lands that could have been affected by such things as drought, fire and bark beetle infestations. The trees are not available for commercial resale. They will be available this Friday April 15 and Saturday April 16 from 8am to 4pm at the Groveland Ranger District Office at 24545 Highway 120.
