Sacramento, CA — A bill passed the California Assembly that would ban smoking on both community college and CSU campuses by 2018.
AB 1594 would prohibit the use of any tobacco product on campus, and law enforcement would have the power to fine violators up to $100. A tobacco ban on UC campuses took effect in 2014.
The author of the new bill, Democratic Assemblyman Mike McCarty says, “We need to promote a safe and healthy environment for the campus staff, students and faculty. This bill helps address the harmful health effects that come with smoking and second hand smoke on our college campuses.”
The bill passed 48-24 and now moves to the Senate. It joins a handful of other tobacco related bills this session that could be signed by Governor Jerry Brown. Others include increasing the smoking age to 21 and banning tobacco at major league baseball stadiums.
