Sonora To Vote On New Defensible Space Ordinance

Sonora, CA — The Sonora City Council is scheduled to a take a final vote on implementing new rules and fines related to defensible space.

The Council tonight is planning to waive the second reading and approve an ordinance requiring that all dead flammable and combustible vegetation be cleared within 30 ft. of a building structure or dwelling in the city limits. Moving further out from the structure, there would be a “reduced fuel zone requirement” from 30 ft. to 100 ft. Penalties for failing to comply could initially start at $100, and would go up to $250 for a second violation within a 90 day period. A third violation, within six months, could result in a misdemeanor, with a fine up to $1,000. The  Council will also vote on requesting the Tuolumne County Supervisors to transfer assets and liabilities of the South Sonora Lighting District to the city, receive an update on Vision Sonora, and break into closed session regarding the negotiations to purchase the Corner Gas property on Mono Way.
