Update at 1:20 p.m.: Highway 49 near Center Street in Mokelumne Hill has reopened after a wreck involving a big rig truck and an SUV spilled 12 tons of asphalt onto the roadway. The CHP reports Jeremy Sullivan, 40, from Sacramento was driving a Peterbilt semi and crossed the double yellow-lines smashing into a Toyota Corolla driven by Kevin Teves, 25, from Sutter Creek. The truck went off the roadway up an embankment and a trailer carrying the asphalt overturned on the roadway. The highway was closed for an hour and then officers directed one-lane traffic control until 1 p.m. Both drivers suffered minor injuries.
Update at 10:25am: There is now one-way traffic control on Highway 49 near Center Street. Expect delays throughout the morning.
Update at 9:45am: Highway 49, near Center Street in Mokelumne Hill, is expected to be closed for an extended period due to a vehicle accident involving a big rig truck. The CHP reports that approximately 12 tons of asphalt fell onto Highway 49. It is not immediately clear when the highway will reopen.
Original story posted at 9:35am: Mokelumne Hill, CA — An ambulance is responding to a vehicle accident that is blocking traffic on Highway 49 in the Mokelumne Hill area.
The CHP reports that a big rig truck carrying asphalt has collided with a Toyota Tercel. Some asphalt has reportedly dumped onto the highway, according to the CHP, and Caltrans has been notified of the situation. The extent of the injuries sustained resulting from the crash, and how many people are injured, is not immediately clear. You will want to avoid Highway 49, near Center Street, in the Mokelumne Hill area, until further notice.
