Sonora, CA — The Sonora High Wildcats continued their winning streak into the football playoffs with a 56-21 win over Modesto Christian.
Josh Harris opened the scoring with a 51 yard touchdown run early in the opening quarter. Kane Rodgers broke a huge 73 yard touchdown run to put the Cats up 14-0. Harris then ended the scoring in the first quarter with a 28 yard touchdown run and Sonora was up 21-0 at the end of one quarter of play.
Early in the second quarter, Modesto Christian got on the board with an eight-yard touchdown reception. Bradley Canepa scored back to back touchdowns with runs of 29 yards and 12 yards. Canepa also punched in a two-point conversation to make up for the missed extra point on his previous score. The Sonora defense hung points on the board with a 25 yard interception returned for a touchdown by Mason Dambacher. Kane Rodgers added another score on a 40 yard touchdown run and the Wildcats went in at half time up 49-7 over the Crusaders.
With the clock running during the second half, Sonora scored in the third quarter on a pulled option by Josh Harris who cut up the middle and was gone for 68 yards.
Modesto Christian added two scores in the 4th quarter against many of the recently pulled up Sonora Sophomore players who got a game time look at varsity football.
Sonora will play at home Friday, November 18, at 7pm. The game will air live on Star 92.7 and be streamed on myMotherLode.com. The Wildcats will face either Captial Christian from the Sacramento area, or the Ripon Indians, who Sonora faced and beat earlier in the season. Capital Christian and Ripon play this evening.
Meanwhile, Bret Harte High School fell to Orestimba last night, 29-27, ending the season for the Bullfrogs. Oakdale defeated McNair, 49-0, and moves on to host Vista del Lago on November 18.
Calaveras High is in action this evening, hosting Marysville.
