Lawmaker Proposes $3-Billion Bond For Parks

Sacramento, CA — A proposal to ask voters in 2018 to approve a $3-billion bond to help California’s parks and shorelines cleared an early test in an Assembly committee.

AB 18 was approved during an Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee hearing.

The bill author, Democrat Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia of Coachella, stated, “It’s been close to 15 years since this body has approved a substantial funding measure designed to improve and expand park and outdoor infrastructure in this state. We know that state parks have a deferred maintenance backlog of close to $1-billion. We also know that the deferred maintenance, expansion, and improvements to restore local and regional park infrastructure is close to about $30-billion.”

If approved by other legislative bodies, it would go before California voters to decide in June of 2018.
