Sacramento, CA — Be prepared for the price of cigarettes to take a notable jump on Saturday.
Effective April 1st, the tax on cigarettes in California will increase from the current $.87-cents to $2.87. The tax increase was approved by voters during the November election. The final tally was 64.4-percent in favor to 35.5-percent opposed.
In addition, beginning tomorrow e-cigarette products that contain nicotine will be taxed the same as cigars and chewing tobacco, which is 27.3% of wholesale costs. Then on July 1st, all non-cigarette nicotine products will increase to be in line with cigarettes.
The extra funding will go towards physician training, prevention and treatment of dental diseases, Medi-Cal, tobacco use prevention, cancer research and other programs.
