Sacramento, CA — The vast Sierra Nevada region north of the Mother Lode set a record yesterday, eclipsing the 1982-83 water year, and becoming the wettest year on record for that area.
The Department of Water Resources reports that yesterday’s weather system helped put the northern Sierra Nevada at around 90 inches of precipitation for the water year that runs from October 1st through September 30. The previous record was 88.5 inches. There are eight reporting stations along the Northern Sierra, stretching from as north as Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County to as south as Pacific House in El Dorado County.
Meanwhile, the San Joaquin Watershed area, which includes Tuolumne and Calaveras counties, has now received 69.1 inches of precipitation. As we reported earlier this week, the record set in 1982-83 is 77.4 inches.
